ORIGIN
Black Lion Organic Coffee began in 2012 in Norway. Back then, Black Lion Organic Coffee exported premium green coffee to the EU and roasted coffee in Norway. Black Lion supplied large companies, including Starbucks in the EU, with premium Ethiopian coffee beans. In 2015, Black Lion opened in Ethiopia, in 2020 in the USA, and 2021 in the UAE. Today, Black Lion continues to export Ethiopian premium coffee worldwide, owns coffeeshops, and roasts coffee for consumers in the domestic Ethiopian and export markets, including online and subscription service for freshly roasted coffee directly from Ethiopia to your door. Of all the well-known coffee brands in Ethiopia, Black Lion has a reputation for the best tasting and highest quality coffee.
WOMEN IN COFFEE
Black Lion Organic Coffee is committed to giving back to the communities that supply the coffee we drink. Women provide the bulk of the low-paid labor in the coffee sector, yet men market the coffee, run the cooperatives, and control the majority of the profits. Women typically earn 38% less than men, do not have the same opportunities, and have limited access to resources.
WE STRIVE TO CHANGE THAT.
For every bag of coffee we sell, Black Lion Organic Coffee gives a percentage to support women through women’s-only washing stations, capacity building, empowering women in coffee to establish their own businesses, and improving resilience of women in Ethiopia’s coffee industry. Statistics show time and time again that when women’s lives and livelihoods improve that a ripple effect happens across communities. When women thrive, more children go to school, healthcare access improves, and poverty alleviates.
In 2021, a percentage of our profits supplied roasted coffee to women “Jebena Buna” small business owners (small street coffee shops) in Addis Ababa, and provided school supplies to 15,000 children of women in coffee in the Guji Zone.
